A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.

Sexually transmitted diseases also known as sexually transmitted infections and venereal diseases, are those which are transmitted between human while having unsafe sex. Unsafe sex includes vaginal sex, oral sex and even anal sex. These diseases can also spread via needles which are infected, pregnancy and breastfeeding. One has to be cautious while having sexual contact with your partner.

Types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases:

Sexually transmitted diseases can be fungal, bacterial or viral in nature. Here is a list of few common diseases which can be transmitted via sex.

•   Trichomoniasis

•   Bacterial Vaginosis

•   Crabs or Pubic Lice

•   Scabies

•   Syphilis

•   Thrush

•   Molluscum contagiosum

•   Hepatitis

•   Herpes

•   Gonorrhea

•   Genital warts

•   Chlamydia

Ways of prevention:

“Prevention is better than cure”. This adage is not without any importance. In terms of practicality, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases is a better bet than contracting it and then trying to cure it. The first and foremost precautionary measure is to have safe sex. Practicing safe sex is imperative because complications arising out of it can have long-term implications. Here are a few ways to control these diseases.

  • Vaccines: There are certain vaccines available in the market to prevent diseases such as Herpes. These vaccines need to be taken before having sexual activity to maximize its effectiveness.
  • Condoms: Having sex with the aid of condoms is another way to ensure that these diseases are not contracted by your partner or by you. Many men are of the opinion that usage of condom makes them experience less pleasure. But the usage also restricts the entry of virus or fungus causing diseases to the infected partner. Ensure that you know how to use a condom properly. Sometime, though you have worn the condom well but due to the presence of an air bubble, the condom might burst open and the infected semen might leak. In this way, you can risk contracting STDs.
  • Being monogamous: Having sex with multiple partners can expose you to a larger risk of contracting STDs. This is because though you may be free of these diseases but can contract them from one of your partners. It is not possible to ask someone to get a certificate of good health before having sex with them. Hence, being monogamous can help you a lot. Also, ensure that your sexual partner is monogamous otherwise, the deal will not work.

All kinds of sex do not lead to contraction of STDs. For example, phone sex or cyber sex or even masturbation will not lead to the danger of STD contraction. Many a times, sexually transmitted diseases go unnoticed. In some cases, it takes a few weeks from the symptoms to appear physically before one even realizes the cause. Sometimes, the symptoms are so common such as itching or the presence of a wart in the genital area that it is considered to be normal. Thus, remember to have safe sex to prevent you from sexually transmitted diseases.
