It is an inflammation of the glans penis. In human males, penis is an external sexual organ. In human penis, there are three columns of tissues. Two corpora cavernosa and one corpus spongiosum. In the end of the corpus spongiosum, it becomes enlarged and forms glans penis. Foreskin covers the glans penis. By retracting the foreskin of the penis, we can see glans penis. Glans penis is homologous to the clitoral glans in the female. It affects nearly 11% of adult males and 3% children. Its diagnosis can be made with the help of cultures and biopsy.
Types of balanitis:

    * Zoon's balanitis
    * Circinate balanitis
    * Pseudoepithelimatous keratotic and micaceous balanitis

Any trauma can cause balantis. Environmental substances causing irritation can also lead to this condition. An infection can be caused by pathogens. Excessive washing of genitals can cause it. A diabetic patient is more likely to have it.

Good hygienic conditions are the best means of prevention.
